WHAT THE UNITED NATIONS VOLUNTEERS (UNV) PROGRAMME ACTUALLY IS

Dated: June 19, 2026.

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Programme is the official United Nations organization responsible for mobilizing and deploying volunteers across the UN system, including UNDP, UNICEF, UNHCR, UN Women, WHO, WFP, and more than 160 country offices worldwide.
Administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the UNV Programme contributes directly to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by engaging skilled and motivated volunteers in development, humanitarian, and peacebuilding initiatives around the world.
Important Reality Check Before You Apply
UN Volunteers are not paid employees of the United Nations and do not receive a traditional salary.
Instead, volunteers may receive a Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA), a monthly stipend designed solely to cover basic living expenses such as accommodation, food, and local transportation. Depending on the country and assignment, this allowance typically ranges between USD 1,100 and USD 2,300 per month.
The real value of the UNV Programme includes:
International UN experience
Professional development opportunities
Global networking and partnerships
Enhanced career prospects
Contribution to global development goals
Official UN recognition and certification
